Candles are always a good way to spruce up a romantic dinner at home. Come Christmas time, we light a lot of candles to bring out the Christmas spirit. A cigarette, on the other hand, keeps longtime smokers in their mood and very much able to take on the challenges of each day. Candles and cigarettes - for some these two can be non-negligible luxuries.

Candles and cigarettes - when used wrongly; however, these two can come together and bring the bad news of a drastic fire damage to life.

Below are simple tips to keep your candles and cigarettes safe all the time ad prevent eventual fire damage.

1. Smokers should never leave their cigarettes in an ash tray unattended. The most common scenario is: You smoke because it gives you a psychological boost for your intellectual or creative juices (or at least smokers love to believe so). As long as you get your laptop, your ash tray and your lighted cigarette together, you start on your typing. The phone from the other room suddenly rings. You immediately rush to take on the call. Turns out it's your long lost friend. You talk for hours and you have completely forgotten about your lighted cigarette which by now has already flared up when it touched a few paper clutters in your desks and then ate up your curtains. Smokers should always have the decency to put off lighted cigarettes or suffer the consequences of fire damage.

2. Put your lighters and matches out of children's reach. Children are very oblivious about the fire damage that lighters and matches can bring. Playing with lighters does not only increase the chances of fire damage. This can also accidentally burn your kids. As much as possible, make a designated smoking room in your house secured with a smoke detector and free from your kids' intrusion.

3. Put your ash trays in the secure areas. Never ever put your ash trays in uneven surfaces - your bed, couch, the side of an arm chair. Minimal force can cause the ash tray to fall off easily increasing the chances of a flare up and eventually, fire damage. Keep your ash trays away from your pets as well. As much as possible, use an ash tray which has a row of serrated edges at the center which holds your cigarettes in place.

4. If it's the holiday season, always keep your candles away from curtains. Candles and curtains can be easily tossed by the winds. A curtain catching a fire is very dangerous. Fire spreads fast in most curtain materials. One curtain in fire is enough to burn down a big home. Sometimes, even a whole village. So make sure that all lighted candles are kept away from curtains.

5. Be very cautious and put off your candles when not in use. Some people use candles in the bathroom for added relaxation. Keep your candles away for combustible objects such as toiletries, cosmetics and the like.

Candles and cigarettes - whether we use them for our little vanities or during necessary circumstances, what is important is that we take full responsibility. A single lighted cigarette can make an infant's life vanish in an instant. Let's prevent fire damage. Let's be responsible and save lives.
