The Balance of Wants and Needs

Have you ever met the type of person who isn\'t satisfied with a forty hour work week and full time education? This same type of person could even postpone family responsibilities for the sake of getting ahead in their workplace or in their class. While this is a good ambition and can be very prone to making someone successful, it would make a successful and happy person.

What is the reason that overworking does not produce happiness? Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that there are so many factors that must be balanced to achieve happiness. Nature human needs cannot be snuffed or hidden just because we want to over-stuff our lives in another aspect of our needs. The emotional need of friendship and love will not diminish just because our desire to over satiate our mental wants is taking precedent.

The balance of wants and needs is so delicate and can so powerfully influence the other pieces of our lives that if we occupy all of our time in one aspect it will decrease in its effectiveness. It is interesting to notice that the closer we get to balance in each of these sectors of life, the more efficient we become with each activity we do. On the other hand, the more imbalanced we become, the more difficult it can become to do the few things that we do enjoy.

How does stressing over too much hinder us? You have seen the people who seem to be losing all of their hair, and it doesn\'t appear to be a genetic issue. It almost seems as if they pulled it out themselves. We see college students who have bald spots on their heads from rubbing that cranium trying to get it to work better, yet when it comes to the weekend; their activities are counterproductive to the building of their mental capacity.

We lose productivity when our minds become so congested with worries about what we need to do. Things become disorganized and our ability to remain in control of our decisiveness decreases. With all of the things that we have to think about, there is nothing so big and scary that worrying about it won\'t make it worse.

If we feel that we are stressing too much and starting to give way to an imbalance in our lives, we need to remember that there are some things that we can control and others that we cannot. Breathe deep and enjoy the ride.
