Nearly all new parents suffer through the agonizing experience of a baby who cannot or will not sleep at night. The sleepless child can cause undue stress on the entire family; exhausted parents may not function as well at home or at work, other children may see a decline in activity or grades, and the baby may spend the days and nights irritable due to lack of sleep.

It should first be seen to that the child\'s room is peaceful, serene, and free from distractions. Though it may take a bit of trial and error, it is also worthwhile to ensure that the room is adequately lighted to the child\'s preference.

Some children may wish to have a night light while others sleep better in total darkness. Parents should also be sure that the room is a comfortable temperature.

Once it is determined that the child\'s room is conducive to a good night\'s rest, the most effective way to help a baby fall asleep at night is to establish a bedtime routine. These routines allow young ones to feel more safe and secure.

The relaxation that accompanies that security can aid the baby in falling asleep more easily. Though it should always end in the child\'s room, there are endless possibilities to the components that make up the routine. Some of the following are pieces that one may consider when instituting the new bedtime ritual.

Exercise

Some children have a great deal of energy in the evening and should be allowed an activity that will release some of their liveliness. If a child is permitted to engage in any invigorating pursuit in the evening, it should always be followed by a period of calm.

A Warm Bath

Babies are very calmed by the rocking of the warm water against their skin, which is one of the reasons baths are commonly used as part of bedtime rituals. Many companies make baby bath especially formulated to aid in relaxation, helping children to fall asleep with less struggle.

Music

Whether the music comes from the parent singing a loved lullaby or a from a CD of favorite bedtime songs, music can help to ease a child. A gentle rocking while the music plays can often lull even the fussiest child into sleep. Music played during the bedtime ritual should always be soft and light.

Bedtime Stories

Reading at night is a time honored tradition, and one that could easily become a favorite amongst a family with a young child. Some children prefer to be read the same book repeatedly, night after night. Other children long to hear a different story each evening. Still others may prefer parents make up stories to tell them, often those that incorporate family members or pets are well received, especially as the children age.

Other Possibilities

Making a ritual out of putting on pajamas, brushing the child\'s teeth, or having a snack just before bedtime can all guide children into a peaceful slumber. The importance lies more in the actual routine than in the individual constituents of the ritual.

It is important to remember that a bedtime ritual does not have to begin immediately before the child is put to rest.

The ritual can begin hours before bedtime, allowing the baby to know exactly what to expect each night. A family that chooses to establish a routine, whether using any, all, or none of the above items is well on their way to having a happy and well-rested young child.
