Real world experience while in school becomes invaluable as students take the next step in their professional lives. Getting outside of the classroom and learning new skills and developing existing ones is something that every college student should have the privilege to do while in college. Many students spend their collegiate careers in the classroom, their dorm and the library.

This is hardly the exciting experience that a student may get out of a college internship. The valuable knowledge and practical skills that a student may gain from an internship is immense and numerous. Many students underestimate the value of a good internship and the effects it can have on them as they develop as indivisibles. Developing a well-rounded education is important as employers are not interested in one-dimensional robots that are concerned with one subject only. Dealing with many different subjects and exposing themselves to new ideas and experiences, students gain an education that sets them apart from many of their peers.

Many students that do decide to participate in a college internship believe that their internship absolutely must reflect, to some degree at least, the career field they will eventually choose to enter upon graduation. While this may be beneficial in some cases, it is not always so. Many law offices or labs may have students perform mundane tasks such as filing, data entry or other tasks that many students will become bored with. Filing can be done anywhere, so employers will not be impressed if the student filed papers at Harvard Law School or if they filed papers in their local library.

Getting a college internship that gives students real responsibility is important in developing skills that will be beneficial for years to come. Learning leadership, or developing leadership skills if they already have some degree of leadership, is important no matter what career field the student will eventually enter. A good leader may become invaluable to a company and employers recognize this skill as vitally important to the success of their company. Having a good team of ambitious leaders is every employers dream, as they seek out graduates possessing these skills.

A college internship that teaches leadership and allows students to grow will benefit the student as they go on interviews. Leadership will certainly shine through at a job interview and the interviewer will surely recognize this. Being able to impress potential employers helps set the applicant apart from their peers and fellow applicants. Having real experiences to talk about during an interview will also be useful, as it will show the interviewer that they are ready to tackle any project and have had adequate learning experiences during their collegiate career.

So when deciding which college internship to choose, it is always important to consider what they will be able to take from the experience. If it is just a resume filler, it may be wise to look for more useful internships that will give the student more opportunities to experience the real world and learn new skills that will be helpful as they move on in life.
