Pajama Game national tour tickets are currently available for the Majestic Theatre in Dallas, Texas and for the Milwaukee Theatre in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The musical was based on the book 7 Cents by Richard Pike Bissell.
The book was first published in 1953, and was a humorous novel about the goings-on at the garment factory where Bissell worked before and after World War II. 7 1/2 Cents actually changed the fortunes of Bissell and his family, giving Bissell a chance to become a full-time writer and move out East where he turned the book into a Broadway Musical. As his fame as a writer grew, he would continue his career by writing about his experiences working the American Export Lines and the riverboats during World War II, which would bring him comparisons with Mark Twain.
The musical was made into a movie in 1958, starring Doris Day as the character of fiery Katherine \'Babe\' Williams, a strong-willed woman held a position of leadership at her job. Also starring in the movie were John Raitt as Sid Sorokin, Carole Haney as Gladys Hotchkiss and Ralph Dunn as Myron Hasler. The movie won third place prize for John Raitt for Top Male Musical Performance at the Golden Laurel Awards and it also reached fourth place in its nomination for Top Musical at the same awards that year. Additionally, it was nominated for the WGA Award for Best Written American Musical.
In the musical Babe is a working girl and the leader of the grievance committee at the union; and Sid is a new superintendent, who is trying to make a good impression on his boss. As the two meet there are definite sparks, but how can their budding romance survive the situations that they find themselves in? After all, the factory superintendent and a union committee leader are bound to be at odds with each other especially when the union goes on strike. The answer is that they will have to find a common ground and a mutually beneficial solution to the problem at hand, the only question is: How will they do that?
This great musical won the 1955 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Featured Actress in a Musical to Carol Haney, and Best Choreography to Bob Fosse.
