It does not matter if you are a seasoned pro or a basic level beginner, learning kayaking safety should be your priority when you start kayaking, as well as when you are an experienced kayaker, this is due to the fact that weather conditions change, water conditions change and a whole host of factors that can be the cause of a mishap or accident possibly even resulting in serious injury or death.

Recent media reports reveal how a young man who went kayaking in Seattle was capsized into the freezing cold waters, during the end months of winter. Granted the gentleman was a seasoned kayaker, but that did not avert from the fact that he required the assistance of a passing ferry as well as that of rescue workers. The story had a happy ending, but the main point here is that one can never be too careful when going out on the water, as there are too many variable factors that can endanger you and your life when out on the water.

In our example of the kayaker in Seattle, the gentleman had sufficient cold water protection in the form of a thick wetsuit, to protect him from the water. However he was capsized and the kayak had gotten away from him in the water and the result was that he was left stranded, to be rescued by the ferry and its operators. Had he not prepared himself in terms of his clothing and insulation against the elements, the results may well have been very different. Perhaps the fact that when he was learning kayaking safety he was paying particular attention and this saved his life.

Learning kayaking safety starts with the very basic skills when going out on the water in whichever conditions. One has to prepare yourself for the inevitable mishap, and hence this preparation will stand you in good steed when out in the environment, possibly far away from any outside help. If you are starting out with kayaking, going out by yourself is also not recommended, in fact even as a pro as we highlighted in our example.

Additional tips that you should focus on when learning kayaking safety are those of first aid and survival tactics and techniques, one really does not want to be caught unawares or unprepared and by learning these basics and staying up to speed with the newly learned skills will ensure that if something does go wrong, at least you will have the knowledge to fall back on in times of a crisis. Take learning kayaking safety seriously and to heart as it may make the difference when something goes wrong.
