Getting started in the courier business can seem easy and straightforward compared to many other types of business. There is no significant overheads and the initial investments are low. All you really need is a commercial vehicle, big enough to carry larger loads and that is preferably not more than five or six years old, and of course a mobile phone so your customers can get in contact with you!

While the initial start-up costs are low, there is however some risks that needs to be accounted for. Most important is having the right insurance for your courier business, so that you will not be held liable for loss, theft or other damage to your client\'s goods, as well as appropriate insurance for your own vehicle.

There are three main types of insurance for courier businesses:

* Vehicle Insurance
* Public Liability Insurance
* Goods In Transit Insurance.

Vehicle Insurance is a requirement by law just as for all other vehicles intended to be driven on public roads. It is important that you remember to tell your insurer that you will use your vehicle for courier business and that you will be transporting goods for profit, as this affects the initial quote and the claims you are able to make against your policy. The least expensive insurance is Third party Only, however this basic level of cover does not cover your vehicle for repairs or a replacement if you have caused the accident.

Third Party Fire and Theft moves the insurance up a level but still does not provide cover for your vehicle if it is involved in a road traffic accident caused by you. Comprehensive insurance is the top level of insurance. This provides cover for your vehicle even if you are the one to cause the accident.

Public Liability Insurance is not mandatory by law for courier companies like vehicle insurance, but it is something you should definitely consider. This policy insures you against damage done to public property or members of the public. As you will cover a lot of miles during your courier business, it is probable that you could use insurance for any accidents in this regard. It will also help you in displaying a responsible image to your customers.

Goods In Transit Insurance is an insurance which focus is only to cover the goods in your vehicle against damage or theft while transporting them from one point to another. Some insurance packages include this as standard while others don\'t.

It is definitely something worth paying extra for as your customers will have the added reassurance that their goods are protected and covered no matter what happens. Trust is paramount in the courier business and this will help you achieve this.

The courier business is a an relatively easy and profitable business if you take your precautions. That is why it is so important to have the right courier insurance for your business. Often this can be the difference between running a successful and profitable courier service or on the other hand the worst case scenario, bankruptcy.
