How To Reduce Apartment Energy Costs

Most homeowners are all about saving money by adjusting their energy consumption in their homes. Less talked about, though, is the fact that renters who live in an apartment complex can adopt many of these cost-cutting strategies.

For instance, you should buy energy-efficient lightbulbs. Although it might seem more expensive in the short run, these bulbs last a whole lot longer, saving you money in the long run. Also, they\'re less expensive to operate.

You can buy a special shower head that\'s been made to reduce how much water is used. Or even if you don\'t buy one of those special heads, just shorten your shower time by a few minutes.

Thoroughly wash your body and then turn off the water, and just get out. This immediately cuts down on your water bill.

Speaking of water, most of the time, you don\'t need hot water for washing your clothes. Today\'s detergents aer made specifically to clean in cold water. By heating up the water, you only increase your electricity bill.

Another appliance that can help you save is your refrigerator. Don\'t fill it and the freezer as full as you can. This only serves to reduce their ability to circulate the cold air that preserves your food. The result is that your refrigerator works harder to cool the items stored in it, thereby increasing your energy bill.

There are also energy-efficient appliances you can purchase for use in your kitchen that will reduce your energy usage. Sure, it will require more upfront expense, but it will lighten the burden on your wallet in the long run.

Also, rather than turning up the thermostat in the winter months, use a few extra blankets and sheets instead. Likewise, in the warm months, give your AC a break by using a ceiling fan combined with a lowered thermostat. A good ceiling fan operates at just a small portion of what your air conditioning does.

Unplug things that use phantom energy. These are things that absorb energy even when they\'re not actively in use. For instance, a lot of people keep their cell phone chargers plugged in even when not in use, and the charger continues to use energy. That costs you money. The same is true of computers and computer monitors.

And finally, be sure that when you exit a room, you turn off the lights. And any time you\'re the last one leaving the apartment, do a walkthrough to make sure everything that doesn\'t need to be on is turned off.

You\'d be amazed how many tenants leave their apartments with lights on or even the TV still on. This benefits nobody, and the practice will only serve to give you a higher electric bill.

These few steps will allow you to save your money for rent and more important things rather than spending an excessive amount on utilities.
