Toronto's Chad Barrett has been held scoreless in his last eight matches. Veteran Dwayne De Rosario gave his teammate some advice before kickoff against the San Jose Earthquakes. De Rosario said he has been getting down on himself lately. He told Barrett he had to kick that to the curb and focus on creating chances.
De Rosario continued to say that the hard part is finishing. Barrett scored two goals and had an assist as Toronto rolled to an easy 3-1 victory over San Jose. Pablo Vitti registered a second-half goal and propelled Toronto (7-6-4) from fourth place to a tie for first in the competitive Eastern Conference.
It was Toronto's first road victory since a season-opening victory over Kansas City on March 21. The club's head coach, Chris Cummins, said to pick up three goals away from home is a great way to build something. He added that his team shouldn't go out the next game and think they cracked everything and are top of the league. San Jose's Darren Huckerby returned to the lineup and scored the lone goal for the Earthquakes (3-9-4). After that, San Jose was ineffective, just registering one shot on net. Earthquakes coach Frank Yallop told the press his club has to make sure that no matter what happens in a game, they don't crumble. The coach believes his team crumbled against Toronto, displaying their worst performance of the season (according to Yallop).
Cummins used his team's two-week break to make some adjustments in the lineup. He moved Barrett, who had nine goals in 2008 as a member of the Chicago Fire and Toronto, from left wing to a more center location. The move paid off, as Barrett broke away free on the right side and hammered a shot to the far post after he received a pass from De Rosario. It was the forward's first goal since May 2. Barrett had another great opportunity to score a goal in the sixth minute when he headed the ball off Jim Brennan's cross, but the ball sailed wide. San Jose's captain, Jason Hernandez, prevented Barrett from a breakaway in the 11th minute with a slide tackle.
But nobody stopped Barrett after De Rosario made a long distance clearance out of his own penalty box in the 69th minute. Aaron Pitchkolan looked like he would beat Barrett to the ball until he strained his left groin. After that, the forward controlled the ball and outmaneuvered goalkeeper Joe Cannon for the easy goal. Barrett believes he is scoring spontaneously. The forward also stated that although he has not been scoring for his club, the team's still been doing well. The Earthquakes played without injured starters Bobby Convey and Ramiro Corrales. They were able to tie the match in the 32nd minute. Huckerby drilled a shot that went past Toronto goalkeeper Stefan Frei.
