Smokers are told to quit. Quit now or develop disease. Quit now or die. Two choices: Quitting or death. Given the two options, smokers would no doubt choose life over death, but quitting isn't exactly a walk in the ballpark either. Although there are numerous cessation devices available, numbers show that they really aren't all that helpful. Let's face it, the cessation aids are lacking in one way or another.
Take, for example, the prescription medication, Chantix. Like all medication that has preceded it, there are negative side effects. Ideally, the fact that Chantix blocks the receptors that crave the nicotine and basically tell it that it doesn't need it is a great idea, but the side effects to having the chemicals in the medication is anything but good.
The FDA finally admitted that there are over 300 linked suicides and suicide attempts in those who were taking Chantix to quit smoking. Makers of Chantix, big pharmaceutical guru Pfizer, have even posted the warning that users have experienced changes in behavior, have had suicidal thoughts, or suddenly turned hostile while under this prescription. Drugs like these are completely dangerous and should not even be made available to the public at all.
Then there are cessation devices that are supposed to help smokers quit smoking, but many never quit long term. The problem with nicotine delivery systems such as the inhaler and the patch is that the smoker MISSES smoking, more specifically the act of smoking. Old habits die hard, and a nicotine patch and an inhaler doesn't help with that.
Now, there is a product that is not a cessation device or is technically a quit-smoking aid but has shown great promise thus far. The electronic cigarette is a nicotine delivery system that the user ingests when they draws on the "filtered" end of the stick. The e cigarette resembles its real tobacco counterpart and feels like one as well. There might be very slight variations in size and weight, but it is unnoticeable unless the user takes care to notice it.
The e cigarette differs from other cessation devices because it combats the hand-to-mouth action and the nicotine cravings that smokers have grown accustomed to. It takes care of the act of smoking that many smokers find hard to quit because it becomes routine, and it takes care of the body's need for nicotine. The liquid nicotine solution contains only 10 to 20 ingredients, none of which are carcinogenic. Sure, the e cigarette contains nicotine but so do the other products.
Smokers no longer have to choose between life and death.
