All businesses, whether they are a global conglomerate and have a turnover a billions of pounds each year or a one-man freelancer who works a few hours each work for a supplemental income, implement some form of public relations. The term encompasses such a wide variety of different topics that it is difficult for any business, as long as it is looking for new business or keeping its current customers happy, to not carry out any public relations.

Business PR can be defined as any public relations which benefits a company, which is the reason why it is an umbrella term for a substantial amount of more specific PR techniques.

For instance, a business that offers a service solely online would look to implement a range of digital PR techniques, such as internet banner advertising or social media utilization. Similarly, for a small, local plumbing company, carrying out local media PR, including local newspaper and radio advertisements would be much more effective to their business needs. Whilst both of these types of PR vary in what is included, they are both beneficial to a business and can therefore be included under the term of business PR.

The problem that many businesses have with business PR is not only knowing what to implement, but also how, when and what results should be expected. Larger companies, such as national corporations or large regional chains will often employ a dedicated PR professional or team who will organize all forms of public relations and can be, to an extent, considered an essential part of the ongoing success of any large company.

Unfortunately, many smaller companies do not have the luxury of a dedicated PR team and unless they can afford to hire a PR company or freelancer for a short period of time, often look to implement as many techniques as they can by themselves.

Initially, DIY PR may not seem like a feasible idea, as the techniques can be in-depth, complicated to understand and difficult to implement. However, once some research has been carried out, it is completely possible to implement a basic business PR campaign to fulfill a variety of different criteria.

A prime example of DIY PR can be seen by businesses utilizing any one of the many digital PR techniques that are available. In essence, this type of public relations includes any advertising, marketing or promotion technique that is related to anything online. This can include anything from blog commenting and forum posting with a website URL in the comment title or forum signature to directory submission and article publishing.

The requirement for business PR to be implemented in any business is one that is extremely large. An effective business PR campaign will not only entice new customers to the business and therefore increase sales, but it will also ensure that the current customers are happy and content and that the businesses name is part of branding campaign, successfully and effectively increasing the visibility and the popularity of the entire company.
