There are hundreds of tennis tournaments that are played across the world every year, but overall there are four major tournaments that are played. They are all collectively referred to as 'The Grand Slam'; it is these tournaments that attract corporate hospitality, Wimbledon hospitality for example, is one of the most sought after events. This is because Grand Slam tournaments always attract the finest tennis players across the world. The matches are fast-paced, exciting and why so many people want to watch the sporting action.
Players that end up performing at a Grand Slam event find that it is a large honour and winning one can result in a huge career boost. A player that manages to take on all Grand Slam titles is often referred to as having a 'Grand Slam'. The actual term 'Grand Slam' was coined in 1993 when sports columnist John Kieran first referred to a 'grand slam' on the courts. The four tournaments that fit under this description are The Australian Open, The French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open. The events are all spread out over the course of each year, so all players have enough time to recuperate in-between events.
The Australian Open was first held in 1905 in Melbourne, Australia. It is traditionally played in January, during the peak of the summer in the southern hemisphere. It is well known for being a tough tournament due to the intense heat. The French Open was established as national in 1981 and became international in 1925, it is held in Paris in May and June. It is June and July that Wimbledon hospitality is brimming with people, when the summer hits full tennis fever across the globe. The US Open then follows in September in New York in September.
What is considered a massive feat is if a player wins all four grand slam titles in one year, which is known as a Calendar Year Grand Slam. More often than that players can pick up all four of the titles in over a course of several years. If this occurs then it is known as a career Grand Slam. Each of the different tournaments, be it Wimbledon hospitality or The French Open have their own traditions and atmospheres at the event. People often dress formally to attend these events and the tournaments often follow with parties afterwards. Tickets are difficult to come by, but if you are lucky enough to see any of the tournaments you will be guaranteed an incredible time.
