From a lay-person's point of view learning about the intricately complicated world of technology can be a never ending and seemingly fruitless task. Learning technology terminology is like learning a new language: it takes time, patience, and a good resource. Luckily for me I have an in-house tech expert in the form of my husband who has been able to walk me through the finer points of "tech speak". From where I started a few years ago I feel like I've made leaps and bounds. I still only understand about twenty percent of what the tech experts are saying when they really get going but that's twenty percent more than I used to know.
If you're one of the millions like me who uses a computer mainly just for surfing the internet and typing a few documents here and there, you might not think it's important to learn the ins and outs of computer speak. I have found, however, that knowing how my lap top functions helps me greatly when a problem arises and my husband isn't around to fix it. For instance, knowing what a printed circuit board is, or what goes into pcb manufacturing, doesn't seem like a grand necessity in the large scheme of things. However, when my circuit board heats up and is on the verge of a melt down, I now know that it just needs a good ventilation surface. Learning about the internal affairs of my computer helps me almost every day in keeping it running smoothly and free of errors.
There are many realms of technology that each employs a certain set of vocabulary words. Knowing certain terms for certain areas of technology can help you not only sounds smarter in general conversations but can help to increase your knowledge of the ever increasing presence of technology in the world at large. For instance, I never knew that various internet browsers had various levels of functionality. I've since learned over the past few years that certain systems, Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer etc, each have they're own compatibility levels with they way the run the internet. Learning a few terms that relate to the way each browser functions within its own realm helps me to know which one will help me with a particular project or search need.
The invention of technology is increasing exponentially as the years tick on. The average person can no longer survive in the business world without some type of knowledge of tech terms and they way computers and the like function. Find yourself a good reference and start learning a little every day about the way the internet and computer world functions and how you can maximize your tech time.
