There are several tragic stories circulating about the horrors of using pressure cookers. The problem is that these stories are simply not true. A pressure cooker is one of the greatest ways of getting home cooked food done quickly and tastefully.

There is no doubt that most people have seen their mother or grandmother using a pressure cooker to can fruits and vegetables in the summer time. Although injury from these pots is possible if it is not used correctly, newer pots are now on the market that makes their use safer than ever before.

The most important thing to remember is to allow the pressure to release often to avoid too much build up. Most accidents can be avoided by simply understanding this golden rule of pressure cooking.

How to buy pressure cookers

When you go out to purchase your first pressure cooker you will quickly see that there are two different models available.

The most popular pot is made of aluminum. It is more commonly used due to its ability to conduct heat and its light weight nature. However, if these pots are used a lot they will quickly wear out and need replaced.

For people who plan on using their pot very often there is a more durable stainless steel variety on the market. The pot works great and the only drawback is that it may take a bit longer to get it as hot as it needs to be.

Once you have decided on the type of pot that you want you need to decide on the size that you will need. There are smaller pots that can be used for minimal sized families, but if you need to cook for a large crowd then you need to get the largest pot.

How to use pressure cookers

There have been people who suffered injuries due to misuse of their cookers, but they will actually make your cooking experience easier as long as they are used properly.

Before you begin prepare all of your food and place it in the pot. Make sure that you cut the food into slightly bigger pieces than normal since the cooking process will likely shrink things up more. Keep the meat pieces quite a bit larger than usual.

Place all of your food into the pot and put the lid on securely. Make sure that you have the lid latched correctly and put the pot onto a stove burner. Turn the heat on and let the pot reach into the proper heat level according to the gauge that is on the lid. If you find that your pot is building up too much steam simply use the pressure release valve to take it down.

Once you have cooked the food the length of time needed simply take the pot off of the heat and let the steam go back down into the regular levels. After all pressure has completely dissipated then you can safely take the lid off.

You have now successfully created a delicious and wholesome meal using a pressure cooker. The greatest part is that there will only be one pot to wash up afterwards.
